Winter Olympics 2018: Canada stunned by Germany 4-3, play Czechs next for Bronze
For the second consecutive game, Germany knocked off a heavily-favored opponent on Friday. As a result, Germany will play in its first men’s Olympic hockey gold medal game on Saturday against the Olympic Athletes from Russia.
Germany stunned Canada 4-3 in the semifinals, two days after taking out Sweden with a 4-3 quarterfinals overtime victory. Canada, the two-time defending Olympic gold medalists, face the Czech Republic in the bronze medal game on Saturday.
Perhaps Canada took Germany too lightly. It sure looked that way as the Canadian men seemed to sleepwalk through the first two periods, trailing 3-0 and then 4-1. They came alive in the third period, scoring twice before falling short.
As Canada rallied to pull within one on Derek Roy’s goal at 9:42 of the third, it was easy to look back on several major missed chances by the Germans to put the game away. Up 4-1 in the second period, Germany failed to score on a five-minute power play after Gilbert Brule was ejected for a hit. to the head Then the Germans did not score on a power play in the final minutes of period number two and failed on a penalty shot — while up 4-2 — at 3:21 of the third.
That penalty shot save was the bright spot in a rough game for Canadian goalie Kevin Poulin. Starting in place of the injured Ben Scrivens, Poulin stopped only 11 of 15 shots. He surrendered three goals on three shots to start the second period, and four goals on five shots bridging the first two periods. He entered the game not having allowed a single goal on 34 shots in Pyeongchang.
Goaltending, poise, defensive miscues, lack of sustained offensive pressure. It was all on display in the dispirited defeat for Canada.
